The following ramble is my own crap, so I can tell you already, I'm wrong (but not absolutely wrong...). Hehe. You know why? Because no one is absolutely right. Being wrong is what we do all day long. In fact, we are right :D In the limits of our own perception. Which is limited, so we're wrong all the time. There's always something beyond our perception and logic and knowledge, and it's that which makes us essentially wrong. There you go, my logic... is undeniable :D And essentially wrong :D
The notions of good and bad are a human form of accepting vs rejecting something. Not only we accept/reject, intuitively, we also create a theoretical basis for that, an explanation that is normally FUBAR. The explanation is there because we need it, but it's always personal. There is no... 'one truth' out there, there are many, and always customized by each individual and group of individuals. The way I see it, this is the reason why certain people might hate dirty smelly gypsies for example, while accepting a dirty smelly dog. The dog is cute. The human is ewww. It can be a personal choice, why not? It's OK for the dog to be dirty, right? Because it's in its nature. But why can't the human chose to be the same? And why is a choice like that - 'bad'?
On the other hand, we are fascinated with what we can't be, or reach, or even understand... I think this last one is especially a delicatesse. I used to like watching a movie starting somewhere in the middle, so I have no idea of what's going on, so that the director can't lure me in, so I discover things in the most natural and honest way... randomly :D And then as soon as I could figure out what was happening, what the characters were, where the action took place, things became ordinary. Not boring necessarily, directors try hard to pace a film so that it's not boring. But ordinary... the magic of the genuine 'unknown' was lost.
Evil is something that in fact doesn't exist in the real world in that pure form... it's an alien thing... so is pure goodness. I think they are both exotic, alien concepts. Both fascinating. But while I won't bother to talk about what's fascinating about good, for now, let me add that evil makes us afraid. There must be something... evil... at work here, hehehe, in the fear itself. It's like an aphrodisiac, there are people who need it in their lives. Fear connects to dark places of our "inside". Dark and exciting. Fear is also a creator of tension - which is great to use in film, where you need some sort of tension to fuel the viewer's interest. Tension is in both music and film an engine, it propels things forward. The best films, I think, are "best" because, more than anything else maybe, have an excellent engine that makes them work. Same with music. Same with cars :D Now, the tension can come from many places, not only from fear, but let's get back to evil :D
Evil is also linked to all sorts of taboos. People love taboos, secrets, and everything that is hidden and unknown. There are so many things to learn, everywhere around us, but only the ones that try to stay hidden are really interesting :D It's silly, and primitive, but it's a fact. We are curious monkeys with a "highly developed brain". Still, monkeys, essentially. I find this even more fascinating. To think of myself as a mammal. Please observe how well we can connect to other mammals btw... but less with birds and fish, less with reptilians and insects... Mammals have a more developed brain, right? It's a human opinion... We connect to creatures that have "more intellect"? Well, then, why scientists and writers and other smart people are not as cool as the street rapper who's "highly evolved brain" is considerably... less used, at least, than that of a Nobel prize winner in gooblonucleic physics... Math sucks! Rap is cool! Primitive behavior is cool. This takes me back to fear and evil and taboos and the sweeeeet unknown.
...
What?
...
That's it. It takes me back. End.
(Can you believe you read all this crap? I warned you though...)
(PS - this is the image that inspired my ramble... I absolutely love it, the ingeniousness, the look/graphical style and especially the shading!)
