People kind of annoy me with their comments about originality. Not about my own work, I haven't created any fabulous works of art lately... but about stuff in general. Like now there this 'Bee Movie' comin' up, and I see people saying stuff like... "another cg movie about insects... that's original...". Hey, it's not a completely new thing, it's been done before, but that was a_n_o_t_h_e_rrrrr movieeeeee (yeah, more than one, I know)!
OK, maybe it can be annoying sometimes to see a recipe being used over and over again, in art, or in entertainment, but it's also normal for people to want to experience the same things (things they like) over and over again. But anyway, when the recipe is being used again, in a movie for example, it's the story that's similar, the structure of the movie... but even structure has its normal right to be used again and again, if it's that solid and has such a powerful impact. Art & entertainment evolve not only through invention & innovation, but also through refining & polishing, and using the same recipe over and over again, while trying to make it better each time. It's stupid to see a recipe used brainlessly, just because it was successful in another context! But it's not stupid to use it to your advantage!!
Now, we don't know yet many things about this 'Bee Movie', but trashing it from the start just because it's "another cg movie about insects", without knowing what the film IS about in fact... It's like saying - "hey, look, another movie starring Brad Pitt... that's original..." or "another movie about humans..." or "another American movie..." or maybe just "another movie where the action happens in Manhattan..." Isn't it stupid? Maybe I want to see hundreds of different cg insect-movies... I actually do! Isn't it even a challenge? To make a new one that's different?
(And just in case - I hope you understand I'm not defending the movie, maybe it's going to be another cheap reuse of some old recipe. I don't care. My critique is simply addressed to that good old human prejudice, which is absurd and annoying. And part of us all :D eh... some things we see, some things we don't. I could be completely wrong, and you may shoot me! If you catch me!)
