After some time of research I'd like you to meet my newest creation, a new character I'm going to build for animation. This is a first concept design. He's got a whole story to go along actually. He is inspired by a line if text I read here as I was researching vestimentation, life style, and general historical data from the 5th century AD - I was already set to build this character, who was initially brit' and I was basing my vestimentation on the armor design of Bors, from the recent King Arthur movie [2004]. Very soon I found that the movie is more or less historically inaccurate in many ways, so I started doing some research on my own. I'm still only at the beginnning of this research, because I plan on going more in depth and finding out as much as I can (and have time to) about that time period.
Anyway, the line goes like this "In 409 the last Roman soldier left Britain". This might not sound like much, but for me was a click, boom, I got it! That's what I want to do. I have my character :) I imagined this scene of my 'last roman soldier' leaving the island and turning off the lights as he was leaving. Let me see, what else... he tries to get home, but he's got quite a long journey ahead, foreign barbaric lands to cross... everywhere he goes people beat him up on a regular basis, and the world around him is changed and confusing, he's tired and afraid, and he'll probably never make it to Rome. Or if he does, it'll be some 50 years later, when he finds a vandalized Rome in ruins. But the most important thing about him - he's a survivor. No matter how bad he is beaten, tortured, injured, ill, hunted and hated, he keeps going, that would be the basic idea. He's done some really bad things in his life, and now, although, obviously, he doesn't know, he pays for all that. He is doomed actually, to stay alive, pay for his sins, and see the world plunge into darkness.
Well, I have to get to know more about the time period to actually come up with more specific stories... For now, this is just the beginning - my 'last roman soldier', Romulus Durabilis. Click the image below for some insight into his vestimentation. I'm still working on the details, as well as the overall shape.
