I do everything I can to avoid lighting and shading in 2D.. Which is why all my drawings are either black and white or looking as flat as it gets. : / Problem is.. once you add color, you kinda add the 'light' element into the equation, not just 'color', so lack of shading/lighting looks flat. : / Anyway, it takes too long and it's a complication I try to avoid.. O___O not to mention potentially complex lighting scenarios. I also see shading as auxiliary, unimportant stuff, I find it annoying when this ends up taking longer than the main thing, which is the idea, the drawing.. I wish there was a fast and easy way. :D Maybe watercolors, something that can be done splotchy splotchy quick and looks cute even if imprecise. The basic shading above took at least 5 times longer than the drawing itself, to me this is painfully slow.
I went to Croatia this summer to see if it's good for moving there at some point, being a Mediterranean country and a really cheap east-European one too. It's definitely not cheap for tourists. But the prices are great in supermarkets, rents and utilities are very cheap.. for now. Anyway, I made the mistake to go there in July and it's oven-hot. July and August in Croatia, with or without AC, you just melt 24/7 and moving or doing anything feels really unnecessary.. great for snorkeling, not so great for work. For some obscure reason that cannot be explained [yet], I've been drawing a lot of Chinese stuff.. or more like pseudo-Chinese-fantasy-kind-o-thing. With a touch of Japanese. Well, Japanese art and architecture is Chinese inspired too. So on ferries from island to island, or while filling the tank at some terrace with countless liters of draft beer and lemonade.. I had time for tons of sketchy sketches : ] I've been trying a kind of textured approach.. or in fact ornamental, textures made of simple lines and dots and lil' circles and such.. I have to try some clean, CG, and colored stuff. Anyway, click on the slideshow below! Expect weird shit. And my favorite 2 Peacock Ladies [the second one is a bit vampire..] That's it folks..
